Once the model is chosen, buyers are often handed a neat comparison table. Year, total time, asking price, paint, interior and program enrollment all fit comfortably into columns. The trouble is that the aircraft will not be owned in a spreadsheet.
The aircraft that looks most attractive in a listing may carry the weakest maintenance position, the least complete history or the highest risk of prolonged downtime. Another may look expensive until recently completed work, transferable program value and stronger supportability are normalized.
We compare serial numbers as future operating assets. The work is meant to show what the buyer will actually inherit after closing, including the obligations that the brochure leaves out.
Confirm that the model still fits the real mission.
Before ranking serial numbers, the acquisition team should reconfirm the missions that caused the model to be selected. Payload, runway performance, high-and-hot capability, baggage, cabin zones, connectivity, international requirements, airport access and annual utilization all matter.
Aircraft within a model family may have different weights, avionics, modifications, interior layouts and operating approvals. A configuration difference that appears minor can change whether the aircraft performs a regular mission without a fuel stop or supports the owner's preferred airports.

Normalize the maintenance calendar.
Asking prices cannot be compared until the meaningful maintenance ahead is understood. The analysis should identify calendar, hourly, cycle and component-life requirements; recent major events; due inspections; landing-gear status; engine and APU position; corrosion or structural programs; and required modifications.
The relevant question is not only what work will cost. It is when the aircraft will be unavailable, which facilities can perform the work, whether parts and loaner assets exist and how the event affects the buyer's planned entry into service.
A lower-priced aircraft that enters a long maintenance event soon after delivery may be the more expensive and less useful choice.
Compare engine and APU programs at the agreement level.
“On program” does not make two aircraft equal. Coverage levels, account balances, utilization reporting, minimums, exclusions, transfer conditions and enrollment history can differ. One aircraft may have broad, current coverage. Another may carry a program name with obligations or gaps that reduce its practical value.
The analysis should also consider engine condition and support availability. The buyer needs to know both what the program may pay and how the aircraft will return to service when an event occurs.

Use records quality as a decision factor.
Complete, organized records allow the buyer to establish configuration, compliance, maintenance status, component history, repairs, alterations and program participation. Missing records create uncertainty that may require research, inspection, engineering or a different commercial position.
The comparison should distinguish an aircraft with a complicated but well-documented history from one that appears simple because the supporting record is incomplete. Buyers can evaluate known facts. Unknowns require additional protection.
Examine damage, repairs and recurring requirements in context.
A repair should be understood through its engineering, approval, workmanship, inspection history and future requirements. A properly documented repair may be acceptable for the buyer's mission and holding period. An undocumented condition or unclear history may not be.
The same discipline applies to corrosion findings, lightning events, hail, ground damage and prior component removals. Labels such as “minor” or “cosmetic” should not replace the technical record.
Configuration and cosmetics have different forms of value.
Paint and interior condition are visible and easy to compare. Avionics, connectivity, cabin-management systems, galley capability, seating certification, international equipment and operating approvals may have greater effect on how the aircraft can be used.
A buyer should identify which differences are required, which are desirable and which can be changed later without disrupting the operation. Installation lead times, certification, parts availability and aircraft downtime belong in that decision.
Supportability can outweigh age and total time.
Parts pipelines, OEM and independent facility capability, engine shop access, technical expertise, rental assets and modification support change over a model's life. An aircraft can remain airworthy while becoming increasingly difficult to keep available on the owner's schedule.
Yellowstone examines whether candidate aircraft are supported where the owner will operate them and whether the next major event has a credible path through the current maintenance environment.
Location and regulatory history can change the work required.
Aircraft located outside the buyer's jurisdiction may require export, import, deregistration, conformity, customs, tax and delivery planning. Prior commercial operations, different maintenance programs or configuration changes can also affect what must be accomplished before the intended operation begins.
These issues may be manageable. They have to be identified early enough to price the work, schedule it and address it in the transaction documents.
Screen the strongest candidates before commissioning the transaction PPI.
Subject to seller permission and available access, Yellowstone uses maintenance personnel and experienced operators to examine candidate aircraft and records, identify model-specific concerns and determine where specialist work will add evidence. This preliminary review is deliberately limited: it helps the buyer decide which aircraft merits the time, expense and contractual commitment of a formal transaction inspection.
Once a preferred aircraft is under agreement, the pre-purchase inspection should be performed by appropriately qualified personnel and tailored to the aircraft's history, condition and known risks.
The recommendation should make the tradeoffs easy to defend.
No candidate will lead every category. One may offer a stronger maintenance position but require a cabin change. Another may have excellent cosmetics and weaker records. A third may carry a higher price and materially lower entry-into-service risk.
